Goethe’s letter to Schiller

Under the menu ‘References’ I have added the text of Goethe’s letter to Schiller.  He had just read Schiller’s essay and found that it clarified all of his own thoughts on Man and his  place in the world, the need to balance feelings and thinking as this was the only way to become a more noble and ideal person.  It was his inspiration to place Schiller’s work into the format of a fairy tale so that the German public could more readily understand it.

It is my impression that he did not actually write and send the completed fairy tale at that time, he conceived it and may have outlined it.  In any case, Rudolph Steiner, who is considered to have been the foremost student on Goethe, noted that this was the date and letter which marked Goethe’s own attainment of Conscious Awareness and the conceptualization of the Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily.  Dave
